Essentials of Functional Medicine: What Every Practitioner Should Know First

Sep 17, 2026

Every clinical discipline has a foundation that determines how well everything built on top of it holds together. In functional medicine, that foundation is not a list of supplements or a set of lab panels. It is a way of thinking about the body as an integrated system where dysfunction in one area creates downstream effects across multiple others.

The Essentials of Functional Medicine course at the Kharrazian Institute is the starting point of the curriculum for a reason: it establishes the clinical reasoning model that every subsequent course builds on.

What the Essentials Course Covers

The course is 8 hours of foundational training taught by Dr. Datis Kharrazian. It covers the core principles of functional medicine clinical assessment: how to evaluate a patient through the lens of interconnected physiological systems rather than isolated diagnoses, how to identify patterns that point to root causes, and how to organize a clinical strategy that addresses the primary driver of dysfunction before moving to secondary and tertiary concerns.

This is the clinical thinking that separates a functional medicine practitioner from someone who simply orders functional labs and recommends supplements based on the results. The labs and supplements are tools. The thinking is the skill.

Why This Course Matters Before Everything Else

A practitioner who jumps into the Autoimmunity course or the Neuroinflammation course without the Essentials foundation will learn valuable clinical information, but they will be applying it without the integrated clinical model that ties it all together.

The patient sitting in front of you rarely has a single-system problem. Hashimoto's thyroiditis involves immune dysregulation, but it may also involve blood sugar instability, GI permeability, adrenal dysfunction, and neuroinflammation. The Essentials course teaches the thought process for evaluating which of those systems is the primary driver and which are secondary effects. Without that thought process, the practitioner treats everything simultaneously, which is inefficient at best and counterproductive at worst.

Who This Course Is For

The Essentials course is designed for practitioners at every stage of their functional medicine education. For those new to functional medicine, it provides the clinical reasoning model that makes the rest of the KI curriculum coherent and immediately applicable. For experienced practitioners, it often clarifies why certain patients are not responding to treatment: the intervention was targeting a secondary dysfunction while the primary driver was unaddressed.

Licensed healthcare professionals (MDs, DOs, DCs, NDs, NPs, PAs, LAcs, RDs) and certified nutritionists will find the course applicable to their existing clinical practice. The course is one of the six required for the Certified Functional Medicine Clinician (CFMC) credential.

What Comes After Essentials

The Essentials course feeds directly into the 18 condition-specific foundational courses that make up the rest of the KI curriculum. Each of those courses applies the integrated clinical model to a specific area: autoimmunity, neuroinflammation, gastrointestinal disorders, Hashimoto's hypothyroidism, cognitive decline, mood and anxiety, chronic infections, hormone imbalances, and more. The clinical reasoning is consistent across all 19 courses because it originates from the same foundational model.

Beyond the foundational courses, the Clinical Mastership Training Program provides over 100 hours of real-case grand rounds, expert interviews, physical examination training, and lab interpretation modules. Monthly Master Classes by leading functional medicine clinicians keep the education current and continuously expanding.
